KNIVES OUT (2019) REVIEW

Fun, frolics, and murder, Knives Out (2019), offers a detective drama with a huge dose of comedy. This jovial hunt for the killer of millionaire novelist Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer), is a step by step investigation lead by Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig), with accusatory eyes firmly set on his financially dependent family, The dialogue is great, full of one-liners, dry and direct and aimed to deliver punches of humour. A why done it rather than a who done it – the suspected killer is revealed early on. This is hardly a surprise, nor is the plot twist, however, there is more to Knives Out. With reference to the struggles of immigrant workers, prejudice, and financial inequality, it makes a point. Marta Cabrera (Ana de Amas), Harlan’s Hispanic nurse, is continually subject to judgements based solely on her immigrant roots. Her employers, oozing of privilege, are completely out of touch which the film successfully mocks.

I liked Daniel Craigs’ performance his character was convincing and different from his previous roles. He doesn’t take himself too seriously and neither does the film. But despite this it, Knives Out puts a mirror up to racial tension and prejudice which still very relevant today.
